Between July 16th and July 25th, five one-of-a-kind playhouses created with repurposed and sustainable materials were on display at Children’s Museum of Denver’s outdoor plaza. The free exhibition was followed by a Gala and Auction, also at Children’s Museum, on July 25th. Funds raised from the Gala and Auction benefitted Rocky Mountain Communities (RMC), a non-profit provider of affordable housing and program services for low-income families in Colorado.
Nearly 100 guests braved dark skies and intermittent rain at the Gala to sample the exquisite fare provided by Biscuits and Berries and bid on the playhouses and a few additional auction items. Tom Downey, President of Children’s Museum and RMC’s President Douglas Smith auctioned off all five playhouses, averaging about $1,500 for each creation.
Each playhouse was created by Design/Build Teams headed by local architects. The architects, all with a commitment to affordable and multi-family housing, recruited builders, contractors and suppliers to complete the playhouses. This year, the challenge presented to each Design/Build Team was to incorporate aspects of both work and play in their playhouse design and to build with reusable and sustainable materials.
